Asam Sahitya Sabha was estd in 1917 AD. It is the premier literary organisation of Assam, the eastern most part of India. Assam has a long and rich tradition of her written literature since more than one thousand years back. The Assamese language is a branch of the Indo-Aryan speech and its script is of the Brahmi origin. The first reference of the language is found in the note of the Chinese pilgrim Hieuen Tsang who in the 7th century AD came to Kamrupa, the then Assam.

Presently Asam Sahitya Sabha has about one thousand branches all over the state and also outside the state. The central office is at Jorhat a city of historical importance. The Sabha has its offices in the city of Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, Diphu and at Dhubri. The branches and the district units also have their offices in their respective places.
